Earlier this term, students from Weelsby Academy, part of the Delta Academies Trust, took part in the Lincolnshire Show Schools Challenge. As a school situated in the East Marsh ward of Grimsby, close to Grimsby Docks, they chose to focus their project on Grimsbys Fishing Heritage.
As part of their preparation, they visited the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre and spent the morning with our Schools Ambssador, Joanne Woodhouse, who gave them a whistle stop tour of some key things which would help shape their understanding.
Firstly, we visited Havelock Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust. Havelock Academy was the first academy in the Trust and has strong links with the Trawlers which were part of the Ross Fleet back in the 50’s and 60’s. We were able to show the students old photographs of the trawlers and how they have a strong presence in the school culture today.
We also visited Alfred Enderbys Traditional Smoke House to learn how haddock and salmon is being smoked today, the same way it has been for over 100 years. The children tasted smoked salmon for the first time and loved it! Thank you to Patrick and Toni Salmon for supporting this initiative.
We are delighted to have supported these children and Weelsby Academy and so pleased to see they came second in the ‘Newcomer’ category at the Lincolnshire Show, earlier this month.
